Newcastle, WA

So last night at around 9:30 PM Suzanne and I went to the QFC in Newcastle. After living in Capitol Hill in Seattle for four years, we have grown accustom to the hussle ‘n bussel of the big city. We choose to live in Newcastle because of the small town feel yet the access to both Bellevue and Seattle. QFC last night just felt so dead there was hardly anyone in sight except a few employees and other shoppers. At our old QFC, there were a ton of people at all hours of the night. We were buying a bottle of low sodium soy sauce and choose a particular bottle because it included a coupon. When we went to the check register, I realized that they did not have any self check machines so we had to go to a cashier. He scanned everything and when he was bagging the items he noticed the coupon that we totally forgot to use. He gave us a refund for the coupon. What a change, because of Newcastle’s ghost town status (relative to Seattle’s impactions), the cashier was able to give us extra attention. Wow, what a change.

Update: T-Mobile investigates possible security breach

Phillip Roman | June 8, 2009 | 12:53 pm

Update from CNET:

A T-Mobile spokesman said on Tuesday that data someone posted to a security e-mail list over the weekend was legitimate T-Mobile data but not customer information, and that the phone company’s network was not hacked or breached as the poster claimed.

The statement raises more questions than it answers. If indeed there was no network hack, could there have been an inside leak? Or could it have been something as low-tech as dumpster diving, in which records are obtained from trash bins outside a company’s offices?

All T-Mobile would say is that it is investigating how the information was obtained.

An anonymous hacker claimed that they broke into a T-Mobile data base and gained access to everything in their system. The hacker said that they “already contacted with their competitors and they didn’t show interest in buying their data -probably because the mails got to the wrong people- so now we are offering them for the highest bidder.”

T-Mobile response:

“The protection of our customers’ information, and the safety and security of our systems, is absolutely paramount at T-Mobile,” the company said. “Regarding the recent claim, we are fully investigating the matter. As is our standard practice, if there is any evidence that customer information has been compromised, we would inform those affected as soon as possible.”

The Pirate Party won a seat in the European Parliament. The party gained popularity with the persecution of the The Pirates Bay. The are prointernet freedom and anticopyright.

“This is fantastic!” Christian Engstrom, the party’s top candidate, told Reuters. “This shows that there are a lot of people who think that personal integrity is important and that it matters that we deal with the Internet and the new information society in the right way.”
